 Standardization is the effort of achieving consistent performance in routine and repeated activities/processes by following pre-determined rules.  The consistent performance is achieved by adhering to Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).  Such SOPs are the key to the process approach of TQM.

Such a process approach with pre-determined rules ensures an effective way of carrying out an activity.  It will reduce not only the time required to plan and communicate but also eliminate omissions, mistakes, etc.  Thus standardization makes the work and process more reliable.  All the problems we face in the industry and our society are traceable to variations in performance.  The variations can be controlled by adopting effective methods which are governed by a set of rules and norms.  These rules are the Standards.  The adoption of and adherence to such rules and norms are called Standardization If we desire consistent output, then variation in input and variation in processing have got to be minimized.  These can be achieved by Standardization.  


Why is Standardization required?  

The objective of Standardization is to obtain consistent results/output.  By ensuring consistent performance, we can expect customer satisfaction and business results on the expected lines.  

Such consistent performance ensures efficiency, timeliness, and elimination of waste.  These, in turn, reduce costs.  These benefits would not accrue to the organization if standardization is not practiced faithfully.

Conclusion 

Standardization ensures consistency and exactness in our performance.  If we do so, customers are never subjected to vagaries of unreliable products and erratic services.

However, Standardization does not mean an unchanging static state.  It only reflects the state-of-art performance of activity as of that time, which is adhered to diligently, till a new and improved method is introduced.

 But we should keep in mind that improvements are possible only if any activity is performed consistently in a pre-determined manner.  If not, what would be there to improve? 

 Remember the Tamil saying: 'wall is needed to draw pictures'.  Here, in this context, the wall is the SOP and the pictures are the Kaizens by employees
