What is the scope of Standardization in TQM? - Mechstudytips

Standardization is applicable to all activities which are carried out routinely and repeatedly.  These can be broadly classified under two headings:

a) Standardization in the technical domain

b) Standardization of business processes

 (a) Standardization in the technical domain:

This covers all activities pertaining to product design, process design, and the quality assurance system.

Standardization of product design ensures interchangeability.  Design rules ensure the reliability of parts.  Engineering drawings, design manuals, handbooks, design guidelines are some of the typical outputs of standardization in the area of product design.

Standardization in process design ensures a consistent way of processing, resulting in the consistent quality of products.  The operating standards, control plans, FMEA are some of the examples of standardization in the area of process design.

Standardization in quality systems results in adherence to rules in the areas of product quality which are related to product design, process design, procurement, manufacturing, and after-sales service, etc.  TS 16949 and other standards are examples of efforts in this direction.

(b) Standardization of business processes:

Business Processes such as order obtainment, order fulfillment, new product development, supply chain management, etc., can be standardized by breaking each of them into smaller sub-processes and standardizing each of them through Standard Operating Procedures.

By standardizing the business processes, we can expect consistent results in the areas of Productivity, Quality, Cost, Delivery Morale, and Safety.  Such SOPs should indicate the person responsible for each activity and control points against each activity.

This exercise is also essential to execute Daily Management. The attention to control points ensures flawless performance, on a daily basis, of all repeated regular activities.  This would enable us to meet the expectations of both internal and external customers consistently.

All business processes can be considered to be consistent with many sub-processes.  For example, the order fulfillment process can have the following sub-processes, such as production planning, delivery management, quality control, stores management, etc.
