(1)  What are Supervisory Improvement Teams?  

Supervisory Improvement teams are formed with members drawn from the same department to address intra-departmental issues. 

 (2) Objective: 

As will be explained in the chapters on Daily Management and Policy Management, the execution of the plans is tracked continuously.  This is known as rotating the PDCA Cycle.  Such rotation identifies gaps in performance if any, and such gaps (or) problems are resolved by forming teams to tackle the issues.  If such issues are pertaining to one department only, then the team members drawn from the same department, join together to analyze the reasons for the gap and take action to improve the situation.  

 (3) Salient features: 

  • The teams are formed with members from the same department 
  • The aim is to solve intra - departmental issues - the problems that are blocking the achievement of departmental objectives 
  • The structured problem-solving methodology is used for solving problems 
  • The teams are not permanent in nature.  The teams are formed whenever problems arise and dissolved after completion of projects 
  • The SITs generally take up projects that are more complex than QCC projects and the SITs use sophisticated tools such as M7 tools, Design Of Experiments, etc.  to solve problems
  • After completion of the projects, they are presented to top management 
  • The projects are evaluated by a panel of judges based on a set of objective criteria 

(4) Role of TQM Promotion Office (TPO  ) 

TQM promotion office owns the performance indicators 

TQM promotion office prepares an SOP for the registration, evaluation, and rewarding of Teams based on objective criteria 

The evaluation criteria can include factors such as: 

  • effectiveness of problem-solving process adopted 
  • speed of completion 
  • benefits to the organization  
  • applicability of solution across the company (Horizontal Deployment), etc.    

(5) Performance indicators: 

The performance Indicators for the successful working of SITs are: 

  • Participation level (100% aimed at) 
  • Number of projects 
  • Timely completion of projects 
  • Benefits accrued to the organization

(6) Rewards and Recognition

The reward system can include initiatives such as: 

  • Awards such as cash award, gifts, etc 
  • Best team of the month to receive the award in the monthly communication meeting from the President of the company
  •  Opportunity to attend national and international competitions 
  • Best Team of the year to receive an award from the Chairman of the company on an annual day.  
  • Dinner, movie, tour with family, etc 
  • Any other innovative reward system suitable to the culture of the company and expectations of employees 
  • The team members' performances in SIT are taken into account for the annual performance appraisal and for the purpose of career planning
